Piggy Pets

Britain's chubbiest pets are to go head-to-head in a competition to become the biggest loser.

Overweight cat

Tabby cat Tinks, who will compete in the PDSA fit pet contest

Vet charity PDSA has picked eight overweight animals who will battle the bulge to be crowned Pet Fit Club champ.

The pets will be put on special healthy diets and whoever shifts the largest percentage of its body weight will be the winner - just like in TV reality shows such as The Biggest Loser.

Contestants in the 100-day challenge include Alfie, the German Shepherd from Edinburgh, who weighs in at a whopping 126lbs (57.3kg) and Tinks the tabby from Kent who is a hefty 22lb (9.8kg).

Around 30% of dogs were classified overweight last year, a rise of 9% on the year before, the charity said.

Animal lovers who pamper their pets with too much food are to blame, according to Sean Wensley, senior veterinary surgeon at the PDSA.

"Many owners admit to spoiling and over feeding their pets," he said.

"Alongside their daily portions of pet food, owners often show their affection by giving unhealthy human treats such as cheese, buttered toast and biscuits.

He warned fatty snacks and too little exercise could lead to a lifetime of health problems, much like the weight struggles many owners face themselves.

The eight finalists are:

:: German Shepherd Alfie, seven, from Broadway, Edinburgh, 57.3kg (126lb)

:: Yorkshire Terrier Paddy, 13, from Bradmore, Wolverhampton, 6kg (13lb)

:: Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Bo, two, from Hebburn, Gateshead, 19.75kg (44lb).

:: Beagle Toby, five, from Southport, Merseyside 22.8kg (50lb)
